What to focus on when shopping for carpet

Fiber and pile are the two most important things to consider when you’re in our carpet store in Pelham, GA. Fiber is the rug's foundation, the yarns' material; pile refers to how the rug's loops are attached to the backing. Both affect aesthetics, performance, maintenance, and longevity and must be aligned with your particular needs.

Types of fiber

Fibers are broken into two categories, natural and synthetic and, although there are also acrylics and blends, these are the five most commonly chosen. Be sure you know the characteristics of each so you can choose the right one for your carpet installation. Wool, the most common natural, is soft, luxurious, durable, and has natural oils with tiny scales that repel dirt. In addition, it's somewhat absorbent so wipe spills immediately.

Synthetics include nylon, which makes up over 50% of all rugs. It is known for ultra strength and resiliency with good stain resistance when a protectant is used. Polyester is hydrophobic, meaning it won't absorb, so stain resistance is superior. Olefin (polypropylene) is mainly associated with the straight looped Berber style; it is durable, hydrophobic, and budget-friendly. Finally, Triexta is known for permanent stain resistance built into the fiber and superior strength.

Pile: Anatomy of a rug

All rugs start as a straight looped construction. Then, like Berber style, they are left in, or the fibers are cut into piles of various heights. This results in multiple styles and textures; for example, a high fiber rug has long, loose fibers like the shag.

The frieze, often (incorrectly) confused with the shag, has longish fibers so tightly twisted they curl, giving it a sort of “messy” and casual look. Iconic Saxony is a medium pile with two versions; Saxony Plush has a soft, luxurious, and formal look. Saxony Textured (sometimes called Trackless) features fibers twisted in different directions, resulting in various reflective qualities. Low pile rugs have short, tightly woven fibers, making them easier to keep clean and somewhat more durable. Cut and loop provide geometric patterns and marble-like textures.
